Photographer Jessica Dimmock’s New Video For Moby

Jessica Dimmock is a talented photographer, a good person and a part of the VII Network of photographers. For several years, Jessica followed the lives of a group of heroin addicts living in a building in Manhattan’s Flatiron District. The photographs are intimate and haunting, conveying the pain and insanity of the addicts’ lives.

The work, entitled “The Ninth Floor” was published as a book (HERE). And HERE is a review of the book by Jeff Ladd of 5b4.

Anyway…Jessica recently shot a video for Moby. As a side note, I have some blurry, hypercolor memories of seeing Moby and The Prodigy in concert in about 1992 or 1993…I think it was a fun night.

What is interesting to me is not so much that Jessica shot a video for Moby (Jessica has a great eye and the video is beautiful). What is very interesting to me is that the woman in the video appears to be Jesse, one of the subjects of “The Ninth Floor”.

Over at the great site The Photography Post, Jessica answers a few questions about the video.

Jessica writes, “We spent a lot of time with the woman in the video, showing her material, making sure she was comfortable with the look and the edit. I think that was a really interesting and meaningful part of the process, perhaps the part that I learned the most from.”

I would really love to learn more about that process, why it was so interesting and meaningful and what she learned from it.

Jessica!! Are you out there? Care to share a few words in the comment section?

That must be Jesse. Looks exactly like her, with same mannerisms. Anyway, it is a beautiful video. Nice work, Ms. Dimmock!

What I like about the video is that it has the same feel as her 9th floor project…and yeah, is that the same woman?

Indeed beautifully made. Im sure Jessica was fully aware of what she was doing and that it might leave some people feeling uneasy.. I am curious how many takes they had to do to piece it together. Its hard to decide where to stand without knowing more details about the production, how it affected Jesse, and what Jessica learned from collaborating with Jesse in this way.

  5. What that mean? Beautiful music and a beautiful handicap woman that is taking drugs again, how one can learn something about this. I don’t think is a cool video, more if i understand that Jesse is a real person, not a character. I would like to read more explanation about the photographer that made an impression on me when i saw her work for first time. This is something that make me think again about that photography, in the most pure sense, is out of the art and the photojournalism now. We are only seeing functional images being eaten by commercialism. What do you think?

agree with last comment. Smells an awful like exploitation. Does the addict get paid to then shoot it up her arm? And isn’t the drug addict as photo subject one that is a little tired? Please. I see that woman heckling round st marks place all the time, chasing her next hit. I don’t need to watch it on youtube as well.
