I’m pooped. I need to hit the brain gym. Day 1 was exciting!  The main event of the day, aside from initial introductions by the captain and officers of the USS SVA MFA, was a slide show and talk by artist Jeff Weiss. The talk covered all sorts of interesting things from his “Crap on Crap” daily emailings to over 1000 people of various bits of information he finds on the internet to Marcel Duchamp’s Fountain and Alfred Stieglitz’ photo of it:

In this world in which everyone has a camera and everything is documented, Jeff asked us “what’s worth doing?” Other questions included: “why do photography? Why not carve sticks?” and “what will this [the world of photography and museums] look like in ten years?”

He showed us some work by Vija Celmins. Amazing photo-realistic, pencil drawings. Does the medium matter anymore? What is photography??

Lots of questions. Questions I normally wouldn’t ask myself as I’m out shooting or sitting at home, but important questions to consider…

Jeff’s final words:

“When you figure this out and make a lot of money, remember me!”
